Brighten Your Drive – Fix Yellow Headlights!
Yellow headlights are caused by oxidation of the plastic lens. When it comes to vehicle safety, few components are as crucial as your headlamps. Especially during deer season, especially at night. Yellow headlamps reduce visibility. Headlights are so important: they illuminate your path, help you see the road during poor weather conditions, and ensure that you’re seen by other drivers. Unfortunately, over time, even the best headlights can become dim, cloudy, yellowed or entirely non-functional. For those looking fix their yellow headlights, you have options! You can repair your yellow headlights, or you can replace them. In this article we’ll go through how to determine the best choice and how to repair or replace yellow headlights.
Repair or Replace?
You have choices! You can:
- Repair/refinish the yellow headlights yourself
- Bring your headlights to a company to repair/refinish
- Purchase used headlamps in better condition and replace them
- Purchase new aftermarket headlamps and replace them
The choice of whether you should repair your yellow headlamps by refinishing them yourself, paying a company to refinish them, or replace them with new or used headlamps depends on several factors.
- Just how yellow are your headlamps? If they are only slightly yellow, the best option is to attempt to refinish them yourself! (Details below on just how to refinish your own yellow headlamps yourself!) If your headlamps are very yellow, cloudy, peeling, or you can see stress cracks in them, they may be past the point of no return.
- Are you able to remove your own headlights? (Youtube is a great help for this! You may be able to do this even if you never have before.) Also, is there a company near you that resurfaces/refinishes yellow headlamps? Where we are in western Michigan, we have a company that is basically a neighbor to us: Alliance OEM Headlamps. They do a great job refinishing headlamps professionally, so if you are local to us, you definitely have a great resource nearby that can help you. It may be that professional headlight restoration is just a google search away – look for headlight refinishing near me. You may be able to remove your own headlamps and take them to a specialists to fix your yellow headlamps.
- Are there OEM used headlights available in better shape than yours? This is one area where Pete’s Auto Parts may be able to help. Often headlamps in cold whether places and vehicles that are stored outside will age and yellow faster than those in warm climates kept indoors. Some of our Michigan and cold-climate customers ask us for good quality clear headlights and we are able to find and source headlights that are used but in better condition. These headlights are made by the original equipment manufacturer. Sometimes they are higher quality than aftermarket options.
- Brand new aftermarket headlights may be the best solution if your yellow headlights are not fixable or if the affordable OEM used options are also yellow headlights.
We’ll go through each of these options in detail so you have all the information you need to solve your yellow headlights problem1
Refinishing Yellow Headlights Yourself:
Here’s how you can fix your own yellow headlights to restore their clarity. First gather these supplies:
- Car soap
- Bucket(s) of water
- Microfiber cloth
- Painter’s tape
- Sandpaper (best to have multiple grits from roughest to smoothest: 800, 1000, 2000, and 3000 grit)
- Polishing compound
- UV protectant spray (prevents re-oxidation)
- (or skip the last two and buy) A headlight restoration kit (includes polish and a UV sealant) We’ve had good luck with Meguiar’s
1. Clean Your Yellow Headlights, Protect Your Vehicle
- Wash your yellowed headlights with car soap (and of course water) to remove any dirt or buildup.
- Use the microfiber cloth to dry the headlights thoroughly.
- Utilize the painter’s tape to mask off the headlights. You want to cover all painted or plastic pieces around your yellowed headlights to prevent damage to the vehicle’s painted or textured plastic pieces. You will be removing the top layers of the yellow headlight and you do not want to remove the top layer of your vehicle’s paint or plastic!
2. Sand the Headlights
- Start with lowest-grit sandpaper (800 grit): first wet the sandpaper and the headlight surface, and continue to rewet it as you work. Use horizontal or circular strokes to remove the entire surface of the yellow headlight.
- Don’t be surprised it will look worse before it looks better! The headlight will look very cloudy when you have finished sanding with 800 grit sandpaper because you are basically scuffing up the whole surface to get rid of the layer affected by oxidation, removing the layer that is yellow.
- Move to the next higher grit (1,000) do another round of wet-sanding, this time using vertical strokes.
- Move to the next higher grit (2,000) wet sanding horizontally again
- Move to the highest grit (3,000) wet sanding vertically again (you are going back and forth between horizontal and vertical, each round using lots of water and a finer and finer sandpaper) to achieve a smooth surface.
- Rinse and wipe off the residue as you work. Make sure you change out the water in your bucket if it’s getting gritty!
- The surface of your headlights should start looking better by the end of this step, though not completely clear yet.
3. Polish the Surface & Apply UV Protectant
- Apply the polishing compound (some people will use toothpaste with baking soda instead of a professional polishing compound, we’ve found the best luck with 3M ) with a soft cloth or applicator pad, using a circular motion. Continue to buff the surface until it appears clear. This make take several rounds.
- Use a water and a microfiber cloth to remove any extra polish.
- A UV sealant is critical to keep the headlights from oxidizing again. Spray or apply it according to the product instructions, then let it cure.
If your headlights are too yellowed to save, or you try to refinish them but they still are not clear enough when you are done,
Refinishing from Professionals
If you are not confident in your ability to refinish your own yellow headlights, or perhaps you tried but it was not quite good enough, you may have the option of removing your headlights and bringing them to a professional headlight restoration company. In West Michigan, we are lucky to have Alliance OEM Headlights who can repair broken headlight tabs as well as fix yellow headlights by refinishing them for you. This is more expensive than doing it yourself, but often yields better results. Note, this is not an affiliate link situation, we are not associated with Alliance OEM Headlights in any way, we just use their services to refinish headlights from time to time and we are always happy with their service! The one catch with paying a pro to resurface your yellow headlights is that you have to be able to remove your headlights from your vehicle and bring them to the professionals. If you don’t have the tools to do this, often a body shop can help. Youtube becomes your best friend if you want to attempt this as a DIY project! There are many Youtube videos detailing how headlights come out of specific vehicles, hopefully you can find one for your specific make/model.
Quality New Aftermarket Headlights from Pete’s Auto Parts
When all the used headlamps for your vehicle are yellowed, in comes the need for reliable new aftermarket headlights. At Pete’s Auto Parts, we can provide a wide array —both CAPA certified and non-certified—for domestic and foreign vehicles.
1. Quality and Reliability
When it comes to safety, the last thing you want to compromise on is quality. New aftermarket headlights, especially those that are CAPA certified, undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet or exceed safety and performance standards. These headlamps offer a reliable alternative to used options, which may be worn out or damaged.
2. Cost-Effectiveness
New aftermarket headlamps often provide a cost-effective solution without sacrificing quality. Purchasing used lights can save you money upfront, but the potential for failure down the road can lead to higher costs in the long run. With new aftermarket headlights from Pete’s Auto Parts, you get a product that is both affordable and dependable.
3. Aesthetics and Performance
There is a reason your headlights were yellow, that happens with time and oxidation. New aftermarket headlights offer a fresh, clean look that enhances your vehicle’s aesthetics. Additionally, many times new lights provide improved brightness and clarity compared to worn-out used yellow headlights, significantly enhancing your visibility on the road.
CAPA Certified vs. Non-CAPA Certified Headlights
What is CAPA Certification?
CAPA, or the Certified Automotive Parts Association, is an organization that sets strict standards for the manufacturing of aftermarket parts. New aftermarket headlights that are CAPA certified have been rigorously tested for fit, finish, and performance, ensuring that they are on par with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts.
Benefits of CAPA Certified New Aftermarket Headlights
- Quality Assurance: CAPA certified headlights undergo extensive testing to ensure they meet or exceed safety standards. This means you can trust that you’re getting a product that performs as expected.
- Perfect Fit: These headlights are designed to match OEM specifications, which guarantees an exact fit for your vehicle. This is particularly important for maintaining the aesthetic integrity of your car.
- Longer Lifespan: CAPA certified products often come with warranties that reflect their quality and reliability. This means you can expect a longer lifespan compared to non-certified alternatives.
Non-CAPA Certified New Aftermarket Headlights
While CAPA certified options are an excellent choice for many drivers, we also offer a variety of non-certified headlights. The advantage is the price – usually non-CAPA is cheaper, so they provide a budget-friendly solution.,
