F150 Engine Buying Guide

Buying an F150 Engine

If you’re in the market for a dependable F150 engine, you know how important it is to find one that’s reliable, affordable, and backed by a trusted supplier. At Pete’s Auto Parts, we specialize in providing quality used F150 engines that are thoroughly tested, run before they leave our lot, and come with the peace of mind of a solid warranty. Even if you don’t pick Pete’s as your supplier, this article will help you learn what to consider when it comes to choosing an engine for your F150.

The Advantages of Choosing a Used F150 Engine

Many truck owners immediately assume that a brand-new F150 engine is the only way to go. While new engines have their place, used engines from a trusted source like Pete’s Auto Parts often make more sense. Here’s why:

1. Cost-Effectiveness

Let’s face it: replacing a full engine can get expensive fast. A new F150 engine can cost thousands of dollars, not including labor. By choosing a used F150 engine from Pete’s Auto Parts, you can save 50% or more compared to buying new. That’s a huge advantage, especially for high-mileage trucks or older models.

We carefully inspect and test every F150 engine we sell, so you’re not just saving money — you’re getting a part that works reliably without breaking the bank.

2. Environmental Responsibility

Did you know that reusing engines is an environmentally responsible choice? Every F150 engine we salvage and sell reduces the demand for new manufacturing, which means less energy consumption, fewer raw materials, and fewer carbon emissions. Choosing a used engine from Pete’s Auto Parts isn’t just good for your truck — it’s good for the planet.

3. Quick Availability

Many customers are frustrated by long lead times for brand-new engines. A used F150 engine from Pete’s Auto Parts is often ready to ship the same day you order, helping get your truck back on the road faster.

How We Ensure Every F150 Engine Runs Perfectly

One of the questions we hear most often is: “How do I know a used F150 engine will run well?” At Pete’s Auto Parts, we take this seriously. Every engine goes through a rigorous process:

  1. Testing & Running – We don’t just inspect visually. Every F150 engine is run in the vehicle, and we post videos of each engine running on our YouTube channel so you can see for yourself. This ensures it’s performing properly before it leaves our facility. Our inventory expert walks around the vehicle, then gets inside and shows you the speedometer.
  2. Full Inspection – Before any F150 engine is considered for sale, our experienced team inspects every component to ensure it’s in good working order.
  3. Cleaning & Prep – Every engine is cleaned, fluids are drained, and any issues that are found we photograph and send to you. It happens rarely, but if there is an issue, we document it, send you the info, and give you choices on if you’d like to have the engine repaired, or choose another engine. Or even discounted and sent to you for repair. No surprises.
  4. Warranty Coverage – We back every F150 engine with a 90 day parts warranty, giving you confidence that if anything goes wrong, you’re covered. We offer 1 year and 3 year parts coverage and we offer labor coverage on any of those options.

By running every F150 engine before sale and sharing it on video, we give our customers peace of mind. You can literally see your engine running before it even reaches your driveway.

Warranty and Peace of Mind

Warranty matters when buying a used F150 engine. At Pete’s Auto Parts, we believe in standing behind our products. Every F150 engine comes with a warranty that protects you in case of unexpected issues.

Here’s what that means:

  • Coverage – All of our F150 engines come with a 90-day warranty, and we also offer extended coverage options so you can protect your investment for 1 year or 3 years.

  • Confidence – Buying a used F150 engine can feel risky, but our warranty ensures you have recourse if something goes wrong. Choosing labor coverage means if the engine does fail, we will not only replace the part but also write you a check to cover your labor.

  • Trust – We’ve been in the auto parts business for decades, and our reputation for quality used parts is unmatched. Check out our google reviews! We sell thousands of engines every year, many of those F150 engines, and we stand behind our products.

When you buy a F150 engine from Pete’s Auto Parts, you’re not just buying a part — you’re buying confidence that your truck will perform as expected.

Delivery and Shipping Options

Another key factor when choosing a F150 engine is how quickly and reliably it can get to you. At Pete’s Auto Parts, we offer multiple delivery and shipping options to make the process easy:

  • Local Pickup – If you’re near our Michigan location, you can often pick up your F150 engine the same day you order.

  • Huge Delivery Area – If you are a shop or car dealer or automotive business in Western Michigan or Northern Indiana, we can likely deliver the F150 engine to you for a $15 or $25 fee depending on your location. We deliver as far north as Traverse City, as far south as South Bend!
  • Fast Shipping – We ship nationwide, and most engines can leave our lot within 24 hours.

  • Secure Packaging – Every F150 engine is carefully packaged to prevent damage during transit, giving you peace of mind.

Whether you need a F150 engine across town or across the country, we make sure it arrives safely and quickly.

Why Run Videos Matter

At Pete’s Auto Parts, we go the extra mile by posting running videos of every F150 engine on our YouTube channel. Why does this matter?

  1. Transparency – You can see the vehicle running before you buy, so you know the engine is running and you aren’t buying a dud.

  2. Trust – We’re not hiding anything. Every engine is tested, and we let you see the results.

  3. Informed Decision – The videos help mechanics and DIYers confirm that the engine is suitable for their truck.

Running videos are just one of the ways Pete’s Auto Parts demonstrates our commitment to quality and reliability when it comes to used F150 engines.

F150 Engine Quality: What We Look For

When sourcing used F150 engines, we’re picky. Not every engine makes the cut. We are only buying Ford Trucks that are reasonably low miles. We don’t buy end-of-life vehicles, only trucks that were out driving and were in an unfortunate accident, and accident that had full insurance coverage. Check out some of our recent F150 purchases:

Cost Savings: Why a Used F150 Engine is Smarter

There’s no denying it: a used F150 engine is significantly cheaper than a new one. But beyond the sticker price, consider:

  • Lower installation costs – Mechanics often charge less for installing a used engine since no “break-in” period or factory adjustments are needed.

  • Avoid depreciation – A new engine loses value quickly if you ever sell your truck. A used F150 engine preserves value. At Pete’s Auto Parts, our warranty is fully transferrable, if you sell your truck the warranty is good for the new owner. Make sure when purchasing a used engine that your warranty doesn’t end with your ownership, if you have plans to replace your vehicle!

  • Accessories included – New engines never come with accessories. Although our accessories are not covered under the warranty policy, with a used F150 engine, they are usually included and it’s your option to replace them with new or swap them over from your previous engine or keep them the way it came.

Over time, the savings can be thousands of dollars — money you can use for other maintenance or upgrades.

Environmental Benefits of a Used F150 Engine

Buying a used F150 engine isn’t just good for your wallet — it’s good for the environment. Here’s how:

  1. Reduced manufacturing footprint – Every reused engine means less energy, fewer materials, and less pollution from production.

  2. Extended lifecycle – Engines that are still in great condition get a second life instead of being scrapped.

  3. Less waste – Salvaging engines prevents them from ending up in landfills.

By choosing a used F150 engine from Pete’s Auto Parts or ANY other used auto parts supplier, you’re making a sustainable choice without compromising performance.

How to Choose the Right F150 Engine

When buying a F150 engine, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Model Year Compatibility – Make sure the engine matches your F150’s year and trim.

  • Mileage Consideration – Lower-mileage engines tend to last longer, but even higher-mileage engines can be reliable if well-tested.

  • Warranty Options – Always check what warranty comes with the engine.

  • Delivery Speed – Quick shipping can get your truck back on the road faster.

At Pete’s Auto Parts, we guide you through each of these considerations and help you select the perfect F150 engine for your truck.

Install Tips for Your Used Engine

Keep in mind, no matter what engine you purchase, whether you get it from Pete’s Auto Parts or not, you will want to buy the dealer recommended oil, filter, seals and gaskets. You’ll also need to flush the cooling system. You want to retain the receipts for these in case of any warranty claim. You (or whoever is installing the engine) will likely need the capability of reprogramming the PCM (powertrain control module) or be able to properly flash/relearn/reset, with either Ford equipment or a generic scanner like a Snapon scanner. The later the year of your F150, the more likely you will need to follow very specific programming, as Ford and all the other manufacturers keep making vehicles more and more complex! No matter what year your truck is, you’ll want to read up on any TSBs (technical service bulletins) to ensure you follow Ford’s instructions and avoid any known pitfalls. For example, the 2015-2017 2.7L ecoboost F150’s may have an oil leak from the RTV seal on the oil pan. TSB 20-2264 addresses this by requiring a replacement oil pan, and if you do that at the same time you are replacing the engine, the cost is negligible compared to having to find out the hard way and replace it after you’ve already installed the engine!

Different suppliers for used engines have different policies on timing belts/chains/components. At Pete’s Auto Parts, when you purchase an engine with 90,000 miles or less, timing components are covered under the warranty, however timing belts/chains/components from engines with more than 90,000 miles are not and must be replaced upon installation. This can be a deciding factor on which engine to purchase when timing components are pricey. Because timing is not lasting the life of the engine and manufacturers are often now replacing the parts between 60k and 100k, we drew 90k as our cutoff line. But other suppliers may be different, some do not cover timing at all and some cover timing as long as there is no TSB – make sure to read your warranty policy carefully and ask the questions when you are ordering!
